About

The long version, for those who want it.

Paul Wilczynski

Paul retired from software development in 2008. Not, as it turns out, from opinions.

He started his technology career in 1970 writing COBOL on machines that occupied entire rooms and required considerable patience. Neither of those things has changed as much as advertised.

Along the way he taught computer science at Suffolk University in Boston, ran a website development and hosting company, and represented MCI Mail -- one of the first commercial email services -- back when explaining email to people was a full-time job. It still is, just for different reasons.

He is a 1970 graduate of Oberlin College, has lived in Chicago, Boston, and Charleston, SC, and has called Asheville, NC home since 2014. He has served on the Buncombe County Board of Adjustment since 2024.

Today he runs TheSeniorTechie Group: the original newsletter, a set of workshops for organizations, and TheSeniorTechie Press, which has published two books so far, with a third on the way. One of the two has nothing to do with seniors at all. It's about Asheville.

Published regularly since 2025, TheSeniorTechie.com covers everything from smartphones and streaming to scams and security, with the goal of keeping readers informed rather than overwhelmed.

TheSeniorTechie Workshops

Organizations that serve older adults -- senior centers, libraries, continuing education programs -- often want to offer workshops on subjects their participants actually ask about, from AI and streaming services to gardening, retirement finance, and caregiving, but don't have anyone on staff qualified to build them. That's the problem these workshop kits solve.

Each kit is a complete, turnkey package: presentation materials, handouts, talking points, and everything else needed to run a workshop without starting from scratch. The facilitator just has to show up.

Books on the practical stuff nobody explains well: digital estate planning, actual AI use, and one book that has nothing to do with any of that except Paul's inability to stop talking about Asheville.

The imprint has published two titles so far: TheSeniorTechie Guide to AI for Seniors, and Don't Move to Asheville, which is exactly what it sounds like and isn't really about seniors at all. A third book, Who Gets Your Passwords?, a guide to digital estate planning, is on the way.
